Magnificat honored in the Clinton Art Society Juried Competition

07/25/2017

Magnificat, a face study for an in-the-works Annunciation painting, was awarded Second Place in the Clinton Art Society's annual juried competition. Many thanks to the judge, Mark Patnode, for choosing this piece, and to the Clinton Art Society for the opportunity to exhibit.

When: August 2017
Where: Clinton Town Hall, 54 East Main Street, Clinton, CT 06413

Note on the process:

Magnificat was my first painting using a very unique medium/technique that I'm very excited about. To create the effect of light-catching ripples in Our Lady's halo, I employed a method known as damascening, most often seen in the detailed workings of antique pocket watches. Before any paint was applied to the panel, I damascened the metal by hand, very lightly engraving into the steel. After painting the image, I then applied gold leaf on the edges of the halo in a design inspired by a classic and intricate watch design.
